Nicole Elaine Avery was born in the Bronx, New York where she survived the foster-care system, later teaching pre-k thru twelfth grade (subjects ranging from art to English). She has taught public school in West Virginia, NYCDOE, and LAUSD in Los Angeles. Most recently in July 2011, she received her AA degree in dance... after having obtained two Masters Degrees in the field of art and art education in 2000 and 2005 from Teachers College/Columbia University. During the summer of 2003, Ms. Avery traveled to Massachusetts to study Educational Administration from MCLA (completing the program in one summer rather two.) Both NYS and the state of California granted her an administrative credential. Her administrative internship took place at CS 102: "Where Children Come First." Ms. Avery has returned to Teachers College to begin her doctoral journey. Her research surrounds the voice of the African American amidst the Major Voice of society in the art studio. Recently, after five years as a drawing teacher in Los Angeles, she was laid off from LAUSD. After a total of seventeen years as a classroom teacher, Ms. Avery has determined her time as a public school pedagogue has come to an end.
